Redaction I is a sound work of narrated exerts from the experiences of ex-employees, undercover investigators and activists in the animal agriculture industry. All context relating to the animal was redacted by static overlayed onto the audio. The work was projected through speakers in a darkened exhibition space. My intention with this process of redaction was to delay the identification of the animal subject long enough that by the time the audience realised, they would have already allowed themselves to feel empathy for the undisclosed subject. In this work, I wanted to disrupt the reading of “Otherness” connected to farmed animals. I hoped this space could allow the audience to experience, perhaps for the first time in their lives, feelings of empathy for these animals’ situations.
